Knowing how to calculate age correctly matters more than it seems. Subtracting one year from another is fine for a rough answer, but forms, medical charts and test scores need the exact figure, and the shortcut is wrong for anyone whose birthday has not happened yet this year. This guide walks through the three methods professionals use, each with a worked example you can check.

How to Calculate Age With the Calendar Method
The calendar method is the standard for legal documents, schools and clinical testing. It gives age as years, months and days:
- Count complete years. June 15, 1990 → June 15, 2025 is 35 years. June 15, 2026 has not arrived, so it is not 36.
- Count complete months from the last birthday. June 15, 2025 → February 15, 2026 is 8 months.
- Count the remaining days. February 15 → March 10, 2026 is 23 days, because February 2026 has 28 days (13 days to the end of February plus 10 in March).
Result: 35 years, 8 months, 23 days. Most legal and medical systems use this complete-interval method.
Borrowing days when the day number is smaller
If the reference day (10) is smaller than the birth day (15), step back one month and count the days of that shorter month, just like borrowing in subtraction. Always use the real length of that month — 28, 29, 30 or 31 days — rather than an average.
How to Calculate Decimal Age
Decimal age expresses age as one number, which suits research, growth charts and fitness norms:
Decimal age = total days lived ÷ 365.2425
From June 15, 1990 to March 10, 2026 is 13,052 days, and 13,052 ÷ 365.2425 = 35.74 years. The divisor is the average length of a Gregorian year: a leap day is added every 4 years except in century years not divisible by 400, which gives 97 leap years in every 400. Calculate Age in Total Days, Weeks or Months
Infant development, pregnancy and some research studies use a single unit instead of a mixed breakdown:
- Days: 13,052 days (count the calendar days between the two dates).
- Weeks: 13,052 ÷ 7 = 1,864 weeks and 4 days.
- Months: (complete years × 12) + extra complete months = 35 × 12 + 8 = 428 complete months.
- Hours (approximate): 13,052 × 24 = 313,248 hours, ignoring the time of birth and daylight-saving shifts.
Truncate rather than round: someone 1,864 weeks and 4 days old has completed 1,864 weeks, not 1,865.

Tricky Cases When You Calculate Age
Leap-day birthdays
Someone born on February 29 has a real birthday only in leap years. In other years, conventions differ: some legal systems treat March 1 as the birthday, while others (and many families) use February 28. For example, a person born February 29, 2008 turns 18 on either February 28 or March 1, 2026, since 2026 is not a leap year. Check which rule applies if the date affects eligibility.
Month-end birth dates
A baby born on January 31 has no "February 31". Most methods count the month as complete on the last day of the shorter month (February 28 or 29), but confirm the rule a test manual or form expects.
Example: born January 31, 2026, measured on March 10, 2026 (38 days later). Counting the month as complete on February 28 gives 1 month, 10 days. A strict rule that waits for a full calendar month gives 0 months, 38 days, and software that rolls "February 31" over to March 3 reports 1 month, 7 days. The same dates can produce three answers, so state the rule you used.
Time zones and time of birth
Calendar age only needs dates, but for precision below one day, convert the birth time to the time zone you are measuring in first. A baby born at 11:30 p.m. on March 1 in New York (UTC−5) was born at 4:30 a.m. on March 2 in UTC, so an hour-level count measured in another zone can differ by a day.
Age on a past or future date

Where Exact Age Calculation Matters
- Medical: pediatric age is recorded in years and months, newborn age often in weeks, and premature infants use corrected age.
- Legal: milestones such as 18, 21 or 65 are reached on the exact birthday, not on January 1 of that year.
- Sports: youth leagues use a cutoff date, and a player's age on that date sets their age group for the whole season.
- Education: school entry rules such as "must be 5 by September 1" depend on age on the cutoff date, not age at enrollment.

Microsoft notes that the "MD" unit can give wrong results in some month-end cases, so double-check any date near the end of a month.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Subtracting birth year from current year without checking if the birthday has occurred — an off-by-one error.
- Ignoring leap years in decimal or day-count calculations.
- Using approximate month lengths (30 or 30.5 days) instead of exact calendar counting.
- Forgetting time zones when the exact time of birth matters.
