How old am I? The quick answer
Your age is the number of birthdays you have had. Take the current year, subtract the year you were born, and if your birthday has not happened yet this year, take away one more. Someone born in 1995 is 31 in 2026 after their birthday and 30 before it.
That gives the whole number most people mean when they ask "how old am I?". The tool above goes further and shows the extra months and days since your last birthday, so you get your exact age rather than a rounded one. It uses the date on your device, and it remembers the birthday you last entered on this browser only, so you do not have to pick it again next time.
How your age is calculated
Exact age is counted in three steps, always from the biggest unit down:
- Whole years: how many birthdays have passed.
- Whole months: how many times your birth day-of-month has come round since your last birthday.
- Days: the days left over since the most recent of those monthly dates.
Worked example
Say you were born on 14 August 1990 and today is 5 October 2026.
- Your last birthday was 14 August 2026, so you are 36 years old (2026 − 1990).
- From 14 August to 14 September is 1 month. The next monthly date, 14 October, has not arrived yet.
- From 14 September to 5 October is 16 days to the end of September (a 30-day month) plus 5 days of October, which is 21 days.
Exact age: 36 years, 1 month and 21 days
Notice that the leftover days are borrowed from the month before today, which is why the length of that month (28, 29, 30 or 31 days) matters. If your birthday falls on the 29th, 30th or 31st, a shorter month simply ends early; the calculator uses the last day of that month instead. People born on 29 February are treated the same way, so their birthday counts on 28 February in years without a leap day.
This is the same calendar method used by the main chronological age calculator, which adds extra formats for school, clinical and testing use.
How old am I in months, weeks and days?
Sometimes a single number is more useful than years, months and days. The result card shows all three totals:
- Total months = years × 12 + extra months. In the example above that is 36 × 12 + 1 = 433 months.
- Total days is the exact count of calendar days from your birth date to today, including every leap day. From 14 August 1990 to 5 October 2026 is 13,201 days.
- Total weeks = total days ÷ 7. 13,201 ÷ 7 is 1,885 weeks with 6 days left over.

How old will I be in a given year?
To find your age in any future (or past) year, use this formula:
Age in year Y = Y − birth year (after your birthday that year)
Age in year Y = Y − birth year − 1 (before your birthday that year)
For example, if you were born in 1990, in 2030 you will be 2030 − 1990 = 40 from your birthday onwards, and 39 before it. How old am I questions
How old am I if I was born in 2000?
In 2026 you are 26 if your birthday has already passed this year, or 25 if it has not. Subtract 2000 from the current year, then take away one if your birthday is still to come.
How do I work out my exact age?
Count the whole years since your last birthday, then the whole months since that birthday's date in the most recent month, then the remaining days. The calculator on this page does that counting for you from your date of birth.
How old am I if my birthday is on February 29?
You still gain a year every year. This calculator counts your birthday as February 28 in years without a February 29, so you turn a year older on February 28 in common years and on February 29 in leap years.
Does the time I was born change my age?
Not for everyday purposes. Age is normally counted in whole calendar days, so you become a year older at the start of your birthday regardless of the hour you were born.
Can I check how old I was on a past date?
