This age at testing calculator gives a person's exact age on the day a test was administered โ the chronological age for testing, in years, months and days, ready for the record form.
For everyday age calculations, use our chronological age calculator.
Age at testing (chronological age on the test date)
Always follow the official test manual. Publishers and institutions may specify their own borrowing methods, rounding rules, age ranges or cut-off dates. This tool performs a calendar calculation only; treat the result as preliminary and verify it in the manual or authorised scoring system. This site is independent and is not affiliated with or endorsed by any assessment publisher.
Educational, psychological, speech-language and developmental assessments organise their norms by age. Because norm-referenced tests compare a score with same-age peers, what matters is not how old the person is today but how old they were on the day the test was administered โ a distinction that becomes important the moment a record form is completed some days or weeks after the session.
Age at Testing = Test Date โ Date of Birth
Done by hand, you write both dates in year / month / day columns and subtract right to left, borrowing 30 days from the month column and 12 months from the year column whenever a column would go negative. The calculator above does the borrowing for you and also reports completed months, decimal age and the years;months short form used on most record sheets.
A student born 14 November 2015 is tested on 3 March 2025. The day column needs a borrow (3 โ 14), so one month becomes 30 days: 33 โ 14 = 17 days. The month column then reads 2 โ 11, so one year is borrowed as twelve months: 14 โ 11 = 3 months, leaving 2024 โ 2015 = 9 years. The age at testing is 9 years, 3 months, 17 days, written 9;3 on most record forms. If the same record were scored on 20 March 2025 using that day's date, the age would come out as 9;4 โ a different age band on many tests.
The calculator asks for the month by name, so 03/04/2025 can never be misread โ it is unambiguous whether you are in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Ireland or Canada. The calendar arithmetic itself is identical everywhere; only the local instruments and norms differ.
This page handles age at testing in general. Three neighbouring pages go further for specific workflows:
The arithmetic on this page is a plain calendar calculation. The rules that decide how that figure is used โ which date counts as the test date, whether days are rounded or dropped, how age bands are assigned and whether to correct for prematurity โ belong to each instrument and are set out in its examiner's or technical manual. When the manual and this calculator differ, the manual governs.
